חֵפְתָא, חֵי׳ch. = h. חֵפֶת. Gen. R. s. 75 יהיבתיה בחֵפְתִי (בחי׳) I put him in my pocket, i. e. I outwitted him.Denom. חֲפַת, part. pass. pl. חֲפִיתִין bosomed. Ib. s. 100; Y.Kil.IX, 32b top (מאנין) חיורין ח׳ white, bosomed garments; Y.Keth.XII, 35a top חפותין. Y.M. Kat. III, 83c top (expl. סנטיריה) מאנין רלא ח׳ garments without bosoms; (Gen. R. s. 100 דלא בזיעין, v. סַנְטֵרָא). Af. אַחֲפַת to put in the bosom, i. e. to outwit. Gen. R. s. 80 סברון למַחֲפַת ואִתְחַפְּתוּן they intended to outwit (Jacob), and they were outwitted.
